Science in The Ancient World

By: Russell M. Lawson

Ancient science strove to understand the origins and workings of nature and humanity. Science has encompassed many methods and varied disciplines over time, occupying human thought for millennia. The questions that scientists ask tend to remain constant even as the answers differ according to time and culture. The strange and sometimes simple explanations that the ancient Greeks and Romans gave for natural phenomena appearless absurd to us when we consider that the answers of today may appear ridiculous to observers a thousand years from now.Among ancient scientists from Mesopotamia, Persia, India, China, Egypt, Greece, and Rome the Greeks were by far the leaders in scientific inquiry because they asked the most penetrating questions, many of which still elude complete answers. Shakespeare and Childhood

By: Kate Chadgzoy

On the front cover of this book is a detail from a photograph, taken in 1930, of a group of some thirty children in an amateur performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, designed and directed by Rowena Cade for the open-air theatre at Minack in Cornwall.1 Standing, crouching and kneeling before a woodland backdrop, some with arms draped over others’ shoulders, others clutching garlands and long wands (excepting one figure towards the extreme left of the picture, who scowls at the camera, arms defiantly folded), these young persons range in age from preschool to teenage. Clad in home-sewn tights, tunics, acorn-cup headgear and (for Oberon and Titania) cloaks and ruffs, the members of this motley assembly of elves, sprites and pixies squint uncomfortably into the glare of an English sun that strips the sylvan scene of any vestige of nocturnal mystery or magic. Political Anthropology: Paradigms and Power

By: Donald V. Kurtz

A while back I talked to a colleague about this prroject. He was a generation younger than :I and specialized as an economic antbropolagist. Me was surprised when I mentioned the different theoretical orientations that have directed research into political anthropology historically. And Z was surprised when he commented that political anthropology had always appeared to him to be a dispersed field kvithout a theoretical center. That has not been the case since the field was formally established in 1940 with the publication of African. Political Systems (Fortes and Evalts-Pritchard 1940)” But to a younger scholar kvho came to the practice of anthropology after the 1970s, thcr field might appear to be dispersed because since the mid-1970s the methodologies by which anthropologists study political phenomena have emanated from different theoretical centers. Production and Economic Dynamics

By: Michael A. Landesmann and Roberto Scazzieri

The aim of this volume is to develop a new conceptual framework for the analysis of the interrelationship between productive structures and economic dynamics. This will be done by investigating the relationship between sectoral representations of the dynamics of economic systems and more detailed analyses of productive organisations and economic change. The theory of economic dynamics is by now an established tradition in the discipline. In extreme synthesis, a number of distinct approaches to economic dynamics may be identified. One approach considers the relationships between elements of an economic system within a given time interval, and exposes them to the impact of certain ‘impulses’, such as changes in exogenous variables or parameters. (Stability analysis in a general equilibrium framework of the neoclassical or classical type is an example of this approach to dynamic theory). [download]
